Ghana Secures $81.92m World Bank Support for Drought-Hit Farmers

Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. Eric Opoku, has announced that Ghana has secured $81.92 million from the World Bank under the Food Systems Resilience Program (FSRP) to support farmers affected by drought.

Speaking in Parliament in response to a question posed by Keta MP Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey, Mr. Opoku explained that the funds are being directed exclusively toward supplying fertiliser, seeds, and other essential agricultural inputs to farmers across the drought-stricken Northern Regions.

He emphasised that the intervention is critical to stabilising food production and safeguarding livelihoods in communities hardest hit by climate shocks.

The Minister also addressed concerns about the delayed establishment of a Farm Service Centre (FSC) in the Nandom Constituency. He assured lawmakers that plans are underway to establish FSCs in all agricultural districts nationwide.

“These centres will provide farmers with improved access to mechanisation services, quality seeds, fertiliser, and agricultural extension support,” Mr. Opoku stated, adding that the initiative forms part of government’s broader strategy to strengthen Ghana’s food systems and build resilience against future droughts.

The announcement underscores Ghana’s commitment to modernising agriculture and ensuring food security in the face of increasing climate variability.
