The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has firmly stated that Ghana will not accept the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia from the United States.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Minister stressed that “Ghana is not accepting Abrego Garcia. He cannot be deported to Ghana,” adding that this position has been “directly and unambiguously conveyed to US authorities.”
Mr. Ablakwa explained that Ghana’s earlier understanding with the United States to accept a limited number of non-criminal West Africans was based solely on African solidarity and humanitarian principles. He emphasized that this arrangement would not be expanded to include individuals outside that category.
“In my interactions with US officials, I made clear that our understanding to accept a limited number of non-criminal West Africans, purely on the grounds of African solidarity and humanitarian principles, would not be expanded,” he noted.
The Minister further dismissed reports suggesting otherwise, describing them as misleading. He reaffirmed that Ghana strongly objects to such claims and remains resolute in its stance.
The development follows recent media reports in the US indicating that the Department of Homeland Security was considering deporting Abrego Garcia to Ghana, a move the government has categorically rejected
