The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a travel advisory warning Ghanaian nationals to exercise extreme caution in Mexico following the death of Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, alias El Mencho, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
The advisory, released after a Mexican security operation on February 22, 2026, noted that coordinated cartel retaliation has triggered unrest across several states, including Jalisco, Baja California, Colima, Guanajuato, Michoacán, and Oaxaca. The violence has been marked by armed clashes, vehicle arson, and road blockages, resulting in casualties and widespread disruption.
Ghanaians residing in or traveling to Mexico are urged to refrain from non-essential movement and maintain communication with the Embassy of Ghana in Washington, D.C., which is concurrently accredited to Mexico. A hotline has been provided for consular assistance.
The Government of Ghana expressed solidarity with the Government of Mexico and confidence in its ability to restore order. The advisory further emphasized the importance of vigilance and cooperation with local authorities during this period of instability.
