Former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings Passes Away at 76

Ghana is mourning the loss of former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, who passed away in the early hours of Thursday, October 23, at the Ridge Hospital in Accra. She was 76.

Sources close to the family confirmed her passing, marking the end of a remarkable life dedicated to public service, women’s empowerment, and national development.

Born on November 17, 1948, in Cape Coast in the Central Region, Nana Konadu rose to prominence as the wife of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings. Beyond her role as First Lady, she was a formidable political figure in her own right, championing women’s rights and founding the 31st December Women’s Movement, which played a pivotal role in advancing education, healthcare, and economic opportunities for women across Ghana.

Her political journey also saw her contesting for the presidency, making her one of the few women in Ghana’s history to seek the nation’s highest office.

Tributes are expected to pour in from across the political spectrum, civil society, and international partners, reflecting her enduring influence on Ghana’s democratic and social landscape.

Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced by the family.
