The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has issued a public alert warning Ghanaians about a surge in fake parcel delivery and clearance scams involving phishing links, particularly during the festive season when online shopping and courier deliveries increase.
According to the CSA, fraudsters are impersonating courier service providers, delivery companies and logistics firms, with some messages falsely claiming to originate from well-known operators such as Ghana Post Company Limited. Victims typically receive unsolicited text messages stating that a parcel cannot be delivered due to alleged issues or that a shipment is awaiting clearance and requires immediate payment.
The Authority said the scam messages often contain malicious links that redirect recipients to fake websites designed to resemble legitimate courier platforms. Victims are then prompted to “update delivery details,” “confirm addresses,” or “complete payment,” leading to the theft of personal and financial information such as names, phone numbers, addresses and payment details.
To pressure victims, scammers frequently create a sense of urgency by warning that parcels may be returned, discarded or subjected to increased delivery and clearance charges if payment is not made promptly.
The CSA has urged the public to exercise caution when receiving unsolicited parcel delivery or clearance messages, especially those containing links. It advised individuals to avoid making payments for parcels they are not expecting or did not personally order, and to verify delivery claims directly with courier companies using official websites or contact numbers rather than links provided in messages.
The Authority also cautioned against sharing personal, banking or mobile money details on unfamiliar or unverified websites and warned the public to be alert to scare tactics and threats of increased charges or cancelled deliveries.
Members of the public are encouraged to report suspected scam messages, links or calls to the appropriate authorities. The CSA said it is working closely with law enforcement agencies, courier service providers and telecommunications operators to identify and disrupt the fraudulent schemes and to hold perpetrators accountable.
The CSA operates a 24-hour Cybersecurity/Cybercrime Incident Reporting Point of Contact (PoC). Reports and requests for assistance can be made by calling or texting 292, sending a WhatsApp message to 0501603111, or emailing report@csa.gov.gh
