Constitutional Review Committee Submits Final Report to President Mahama

The Constitutional Review Committee has formally presented its final report to President John Dramani Mahama, marking a significant step in Ghana’s ongoing constitutional reform process.

Chaired by Professor H. Kwasi Prempeh, Executive Director of the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), the committee was mandated to review the 1992 Constitution and recommend reforms to strengthen the country’s democratic governance framework.

The submission concludes months of nationwide consultations and extensive technical analysis undertaken by the eight-member panel.

Other members of the committee include Justice Sophia Adinyira, a retired Supreme Court Justice; Professor Kwame Karikari; former Electoral Commission Chairperson Charlotte Osei; Dr. Godwin Djokoto; Ibrahim Tanko Amidu; Dr. Esi Ansah; and Dr. Rainer Akumperigeya.

Among its major proposals, the committee recommended a clear separation between the legislature and the executive. It also reaffirmed that the Constitution contains no provision for a third presidential term.

Additionally, the committee suggested extending the presidential tenure from four years to five years, a move it believes would enhance policy continuity and governance stability.
