Constitutional Review Committee Recommends Five-Year Presidential Term

The Constitutional Review Committee has recommended extending the presidential term of office from four to five years, as part of measures aimed at strengthening governance and ensuring policy continuity.

Committee Chairman, Professor H. Kwasi Prempeh, announced the proposal on Monday, December 22, during the formal presentation of the committee’s report to the President at the Jubilee House.

While the full rationale behind the recommendation has not yet been released to the public, Prof. Prempeh explained that the change is intended to provide presidents with sufficient time to design, implement, and consolidate long-term national policies without the constant pressure of short election cycles.

He stressed that the proposal does not erode democratic accountability, but rather seeks to reinforce institutions, improve checks and balances, and enhance efficiency in public administration.

Responding to the presentation, President John Dramani Mahama praised the committee for what he described as a thorough and reflective review process. He assured members that the recommendations would be carefully examined and subjected to constitutional and public scrutiny.

The suggested extension of the presidential term is among several reforms outlined in the committee’s report, which is expected to generate wide national discussion ahead of any potential constitutional amendments.
