Committee Flags Weak Economic Indicators, Finance Ministry Assures Improvement

The Committee on Economy and Development yesterday held a public hearing with selected Ministries and their Agencies to review the 2024 National Annual Progress Report and provide recommendations to guide Ghana’s economic performance in the year ahead.

Appearing before the Committee were the Ministry of Finance led by Deputy Minister Hon. Thomas Nyarko Ampem, Dr. Nii Moi Thompson of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), and Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu of the Ghana Statistical Service.

After presentations from the Ministry and its Agencies, Committee Chairman Hon. Eric Afful expressed concern that key indicators—including microeconomic stability and the debt-to-GDP ratio—did not reflect positively during the year under review. He voiced hope that the 2025 Annual Progress Report would show stronger outcomes.

Responding to the concerns, Deputy Finance Minister Hon. Thomas Nyarko Ampem assured the Committee that the Ministry is working within its mandate to ensure improved economic performance in 2025. “We are doing everything possible to make the economy perform better than it did in 2024,” he stated.

The Committee is expected to consolidate its observations and recommendations into a report that will serve as a guide for government policy and economic management in the coming year.
