The Amasaman High Court has reduced the 15-year prison sentence handed to evangelist Nana Agradaa to 12 calendar months, describing the original punishment as harsh and excessive.
In its ruling, the court upheld her conviction but exercised its discretion to vary the sentence, cutting it down from the 15 years of hard labour imposed by the trial court.
The new sentence takes effect from July 3, 2025, the date of her conviction, meaning Nana Agradaa will serve a total of one year in prison.
The court noted that while the offences committed by the convict deserved punishment, the severity of the original sentence was disproportionate to the circumstances of the case, warranting a reduction.
Nana Agradaa, a former fetish priestess turned evangelist, was convicted on charges of charlatanic advertisement and defrauding by false pretence.
She was found guilty of luring victims through a televised broadcast in 2022, during which she falsely claimed to possess spiritual powers capable of doubling money.
As a result of these claims, several individuals parted with large sums of money in anticipation of miraculous financial returns—promises that were never fulfilled.
