AG Files Response to Lawsuit Alleging Religious Bias at Wesley Girls SHS

Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dominic Ayine, has submitted an official reply to a legal action contesting what the plaintiffs describe as unfair religious practices at Wesley Girls’ Senior High School (SHS).

The case, lodged on December 24, 2024, by private lawyer Shafic Osman, invokes the Supreme Court’s original jurisdiction under Articles 2(1)(b) and 130(1)(a) of the 1992 Constitution. It challenges the school’s alleged limitations on Muslim students, including claims that they are prohibited from wearing the hijab, observing the Ramadan fast, and engaging in other Islamic rites—restrictions the plaintiffs argue infringe constitutional guarantees of religious liberty.

In his response, the Attorney General dismisses the claim that the school’s regulations are unlawful. He contends that Wesley Girls SHS, founded and managed under the Methodist Church of Ghana, has the right to uphold rules aligned with its Methodist traditions and beliefs.

The AG maintains that the institution’s religious character empowers it to establish codes of behavior and worship on campus, even when such directives limit the practice of other faiths.
