Ablekuma North Re-run: Police Officer to Face Criminal Charges for Assaulting Journalist

A police officer captured in a viral video physically assaulting a journalist during the Ablekuma North parliamentary re-run is set to face criminal prosecution, the Accra Regional Police Command has confirmed.

The unfortunate incident occurred on Friday, July 11, amid heightened tensions and pockets of violence that disrupted voting activities at several polling centers. In a press release issued on Thursday, July 17, the police indicated that they are currently analysing multiple video footages to identify all individuals involved in the disturbances.

The assaulted journalist, along with other affected persons, has been issued a Police Medical Report Form to facilitate medical treatment and support any legal proceedings. Although the officer’s name has not yet been disclosed, authorities say he was promptly withdrawn from active duty and placed in custody pending further investigation.

The Police Command has reiterated its resolve to deal decisively with all forms of electoral violence. According to the statement, acts of intimidation, assault, or misconduct during elections will be met with the full rigours of the law.

Residents and eyewitnesses are being encouraged to assist with investigations by sharing credible information via emergency hotlines 18555 or 191.

The Ablekuma North re-run became necessary following the annulment of the original parliamentary results due to electoral irregularities. The Ghana Police Service has assured the public of its unwavering commitment to upholding law and order before, during, and after the electoral process.
