Ablakwa Strengthens Bilateral Ties on Jamaica Trip

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has arrived in Jamaica for a two-day official and solidarity visit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and deepening cooperation between the two nations.

The Minister was warmly received at the Norman Manley International Airport by Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, JP, who extended the government’s hospitality to the Ghanaian delegation.

A central focus of the visit is to engage directly with Ghanaian troops from the 48 Engineer Regiment, who have been stationed in Jamaica for the past six weeks. The contingent has been assisting in reconstruction efforts following the devastation and loss of lives caused by Hurricane Melissa. Mr. Ablakwa is expected to deliver a special message from Ghana’s Commander-in-Chief, President John Dramani Mahama, to the soldiers in recognition of their service.

During the visit, the Foreign Minister will hold bilateral talks with Jamaica’s Prime Minister, Dr. the Most Honourable Andrew Holness, ON, PC, MP. Discussions are expected to cover a range of issues, including finalising technical consultations for the deployment of Ghanaian health workers and teachers to Jamaica later this year.

The Ghanaian delegation includes Deputy Minister for Defence, Hon. Ernest Brogya Genfi; Presidential Special Envoy to the Caribbean, H.E. Kwasi Kyei Darkwah; Chief of the Army Staff, Major General Lawrence K. S. Gbetanu; as well as senior officials from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Education, and Health.

Speaking on the enduring relationship between the two countries, Mr. Ablakwa reaffirmed that “the ancestral and familial bond between Ghana and Jamaica shall never ever be broken.”

The visit underscores Ghana’s commitment to solidarity with Jamaica and highlights the shared cultural and historical ties that continue to unite the two nations.
