The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, under the leadership of Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, has reaffirmed its central role in advancing government’s decentralization agenda and bringing governance closer to the people.
Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang yesterday paid a courtesy visit to the Ministry to engage with its leadership and staff, and to better appreciate progress being made in responsive governance and effective service delivery across the country.
During the meeting, Hon. Ibrahim briefed the Vice President on notable achievements since assuming office. These include the successful orientation of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), with clear guidelines issued on the effective use of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF). He also highlighted the National Decentralization Dialogue, which has provided a vital platform for stakeholders to shape the next phase of Ghana’s decentralization journey.
The Minister further emphasized the Ministry’s dedication to enhancing collaboration with traditional authorities, noting a significant rise in engagement with chiefs and queen mothers. As part of this commitment, allowances for paramount chiefs and queen mothers have been increased by about 300 per cent, reaffirming the vital role of traditional leadership in fostering unity, development, and local governance.
Vice President Opoku-Agyemang commended the Ministry for its efforts, stressing that effective decentralization remains key to strengthening democracy, empowering communities, and ensuring inclusive national development.
