MoGCSP Empowers Kayayei on Health, Finance and Protection from Abuse

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has held a Kayayei Empowerment Workshop aimed at improving the wellbeing, financial resilience, and personal safety of female head porters across the country.

The workshop, held as part of the Ministry’s end-of-year outreach, equipped participants with knowledge on reproductive health, financial inclusion, and sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), including how to access reporting and support services.

Speaking at the event, the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, said the initiative reflects Government’s commitment to empowering vulnerable groups with information that enables them to make informed decisions and protect themselves.

“Female head porters are an integral part of our work. Educating them on their rights and available support systems creates a ripple effect that extends our impact beyond direct engagements,” the Minister stated.

Participants received packed meals and essential food items, including rice and cooking oil, to support their households during the festive season.

The Minister also highlighted the passage of the Social Protection Act as a key achievement for the year, noting that the law enhances coordination of social interventions nationwide. She added that several policies—including the National Gender Policy, Domestic Violence Policy, Disability Policy, and Early Childhood Care and Development Policy—have received approval and will soon be rolled out.

Participants were urged to report all forms of abuse and rights violations through the Ministry’s toll-free helplines: 0800-111-222, 0800-800-800, and 0800-900-900, especially during the festive season when Kayayei are most vulnerable to exploitation.

The workshop forms part of broader efforts to ensure inclusive development and social protection for all, particularly women in the informal sector.
