The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has directed all shops and markets within the metropolis to remain closed on Saturday, October 4, 2025, from 6 a.m. until the completion of the first official National Sanitation Day clean-up exercise.
The directive follows the launch of the National Sanitation Day initiative by the President, which mandates the first Saturday of every month to be observed as a nationwide clean-up exercise. The move is part of efforts to rid the city of filth, improve public health, and promote a safer and more resilient environment.
According to a statement issued by the Assembly, the operation will cover all sub-metropolitan areas, with intensified activities in major markets and high-risk zones such as Agbogbloshie, Tuesday Market, Kwame Nkrumah Interchange and its environs, Kwasiadwaso, and Kaneshie Market. Activities will include desilting of major drains, clearing of refuse, and tidying up of market areas to reduce flooding and health risks.
The AMA emphasized that all residents, traders, and shop owners are required to observe the temporary closure and actively participate in the exercise. Public Health Officers will be deployed across communities to ensure compliance.
“Failure to comply constitutes an offence punishable by law, with fines up to one hundred penalty units or imprisonment of not less than thirty days and not more than six months, or both,” the statement warned, adding that repeat offenders will face additional daily penalties.
Head of Public Affairs for AMA, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, who signed the release on behalf of the Metro Chief Executive, urged the public to treat the directive with seriousness. “This citywide exercise is about strengthening our shared responsibility for a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable Accra,” he stated.
The exercise is expected to mark the beginning of a renewed national campaign towards environmental cleanliness and civic responsibility.
