Relief for Ghanaian DSTV Subscribers as MultiChoice, Government Strike Deal

After years of complaints over rising pay-TV costs, Ghanaian DSTV subscribers are set to enjoy significant relief. Beginning October 1, 2025, customers will receive up to 50% more channels at no extra cost, following a new agreement between MultiChoice and the Government of Ghana.

Speaking at the press briefing, Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George stated that business owners like Kwame Owusu, who operates a football viewing center in Accra, the announcement is timely. “I can now show live football matches even on the Family package. This will attract more customers without increasing my costs,” he said.

Households have also welcomed the move. Ama Serwaa, a subscriber in Kumasi, noted: “Times are hard, and this upgrade means my children can enjoy more channels without me paying extra.”

As part of the deal, decoder and dish kit prices will be cut by 50%, making it easier for new customers to sign up.

Authorities also cautioned against the use of illegal “ghost boxes” imported from Nigeria, which deprive Ghana of tax revenue and undermine local content production. The government has pledged stricter enforcement to curb the practice.

With more entertainment for less money, the initiative is expected to ease household budgets and reshape the pay-TV market just in time for the festive season.
