President Mahama Submits Electoral Violence Report to Attorney-General for Legal Assessment

President John Dramani Mahama has forwarded a detailed report on electoral disturbances recorded during the 2020 and 2024 general elections to the Attorney-General, Dr Dominic Ayine, for legal evaluation and guidance.

The document, prepared and presented by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, highlights findings on violent episodes that disrupted both elections. These include incidents of gunfire and confrontations between political party loyalists and security personnel.

The unrest led to several casualties and injuries across various constituencies. According to the report, eight individuals lost their lives during the 2020 elections, while three more were fatally wounded in the 2024 polls.

The IGP’s report was submitted in response to a directive from President Mahama shortly after assuming office, following persistent appeals from civil society groups demanding accountability and openness in addressing politically driven violence.

By engaging the Attorney-General, the President seeks to identify the necessary legal actions to deliver justice to victims and to establish safeguards that will deter future electoral violence.

The Office of the President has reiterated its dedication to reinforcing the rule of law and rebuilding trust in Ghana’s democratic framework.
