WAFCON 2024: Sports Ministry Rewards Black Queens with $2000 Each for Quarter Final Berth

The senior women’s national team, the Black Queens, have each received a $2,000 cash bonus from the Ministry of Youth and Sports after advancing to the quarter-finals of the 2024 TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The reward was announced on Thursday following the team’s spirited comeback in the group stage, where they bounced back from a tough opening defeat to reach the last eight for the first time since 2016.

After a 2-0 loss to defending champions South Africa in their opener and a 1-1 draw with Mali in their second match, the Queens secured a dominant 4-1 victory over Tanzania in their final Group C game, enough to finish second and book a quarter final slot.

The Sports Ministry commended the team for their resilience, describing the reward as both recognition and motivation ahead of the knockout rounds.

Ghana is now set to face Algeria on Saturday, August 19, in a crucial quarter final clash. A win would not only send the Queens to the semi finals for the first time since 2006, but also edge them closer to a spot at the 2025 FIFA Women’s World Cup awarded to the top four teams from the tournament.

The resurgence of the team has been credited to head coach Nora Häuptle’s tactical leadership and the outstanding form of players like Doris Boaduwaa, Evelyn Badu, and goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan.

With confidence growing both within the squad and among fans, hopes are high that the Black Queens can go even further in the tournament.
