Ukraine: Independence Day celebration amid fear of Russian attack

Ukraine celebrates its 31st Independence Day since it separated from the Soviet Union.

Before the February conflict, Ukrainian independence was a significant holiday being colorfully celebrated across the country. However, under current circumstances, such sightings can no longer be seen. Ukrainian authorities have since banned public gatherings and imposed curfews in some key cities.

In place of the Independence Day celebration, overshadowed by the conflict, captured Russian tanks, and military artilleries are being displayed on the streets. Despite this unorthodox “celebration”, there is still fear of an impending attack by Russia to coincide with Ukraine’s breakaway from the Soviet Union. Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president has said “we should be aware that this week Russia may try to do something particularly nasty, something particularly cruel”.

Russia accused the Ukrainian government of orchestrating the assassination of key Putin ally Alexander Dugin’s daughter, Darya. An accusation denied by Ukraine. The Russian foreign minister, however, indicated that there would be no mercy for the killers.
