Government Allocates GH¢350m for Flood Relief and Mitigation

The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has outlined the government’s response to the devastating floods that struck parts of the country on June 29, assuring Parliament that relief and recovery efforts are underway.

Presenting a statement to the House, the Minister disclosed that the floods affected 25 communities across 18 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Greater Accra Region. He reported that 7,761 households, comprising 38,802 individuals, were displaced, while 12 lives were lost and seven persons remain missing. The Volta, Central, and Western North regions also recorded significant impacts.

Hon. Muntaka announced that President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Minister for Finance, Hon. Cassiel Ato Forson, to release GH¢350 million from the contingency fund to support the national response. Of this amount, GH¢200 million will be used to provide relief items for affected households, while GH¢150 million will finance flood mitigation measures in impacted communities.

He further revealed that personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces, including the 48 Engineer Regiment, have been deployed to assist with rescue operations, infrastructure rehabilitation, and other emergency interventions.

Members of Parliament welcomed the announcement, stressing the need for sustained investment in preventive measures to address Ghana’s perennial flooding challenge.
