Health Minister Calls on CHAG to Lead Free Primary Healthcare Delivery

The Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has urged the Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG) to take a frontline role in advancing the government’s Free Primary Healthcare (FPHC) agenda, describing the faith-based network as a vital partner in expanding equitable access to quality healthcare nationwide.

Speaking at the CHAG Annual Conference 2026, themed “Positioning CHAG to Deliver People-Centred Free Primary Health Care at the Community Level,” Hon. Akandoh commended CHAG’s longstanding contribution to healthcare delivery, particularly in underserved and hard-to-reach communities. He noted that CHAG’s extensive presence and trusted community relationships uniquely position it to support the successful rollout of the FPHC programme.

The Minister emphasized that the policy will strengthen access to maternal and child healthcare, immunisation, routine screening for non-communicable diseases, malaria treatment, and other essential services. He further called for renewed attention to patient experience, urging health professionals to pair clinical excellence with compassion, dignity, and respect.

“Patients often feel treated, but not always cared for,” Hon. Akandoh remarked, stressing that the success of healthcare reforms depends not only on access to services but also on the quality of care delivered.

CHAG’s Executive Director, Dr. Peter Kwame Yeboah, reaffirmed the Association’s commitment to supporting national health priorities and strengthening primary healthcare delivery. He highlighted CHAG’s role in providing critical services in remote communities, often serving as the only source of care, and called for stronger collaboration among government, development partners, faith-based institutions, and communities to drive innovation and improve health outcomes.

This year’s conference seeks to align CHAG’s mission with Ghana’s Free Primary Healthcare initiative, while reflecting the 2026 World Health Summit Regional focus on people-centred and community-led primary healthcare.
