FIDA Ghana Urges Parliament to Strengthen Spousal Property Rights

The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Ghana has called on the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban S.K. Bagbin, to deliberate on the implementation of Article 22 of the 1992 Constitution and explore legislative pathways to strengthen the protection of spousal property rights in Ghana.

In a formal appeal, FIDA Ghana emphasized that the constitutional provision, which guarantees equitable distribution of property acquired during marriage, requires stronger legislative backing to ensure fairness and justice in marital relations. The organization noted that many spouses, particularly women, continue to face challenges in asserting their rights to property upon dissolution of marriage or death of a partner.

The call comes amid growing advocacy for reforms that will safeguard vulnerable groups and promote gender equity in Ghana’s legal framework. FIDA Ghana underscored the importance of Parliament’s role in translating constitutional guarantees into enforceable laws that protect families and uphold human dignity.

By urging the Speaker to prioritize this matter, FIDA Ghana reaffirmed its commitment to advancing women’s rights and strengthening Ghana’s democratic and legal institutions.
