The Ministry of Health has joined the global community to launch World Health Day 2026, urging stronger reliance on science and deeper collaboration across sectors to improve health outcomes.
Reading a statement on behalf of the Ministry, Health Minister Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh said this year’s theme, “Together for Health: Stand with Science,” reflects Ghana’s commitment to using data, research, and partnerships to strengthen public health.
He outlined ongoing initiatives including real-time disease surveillance, enhanced laboratory systems, and targeted interventions to address infectious diseases, non-communicable conditions, and antimicrobial resistance. The Minister also emphasized Ghana’s adoption of the One Health approach, integrating human, animal, and environmental health systems to better manage threats such as zoonotic diseases, while advancing nutrition, food safety, and environmental health policies.
Dr. Fiona Braka, World Health Organization Country Representative, commended Ghana’s progress in areas such as immunization and outbreak response, noting that these gains have been driven by science and collective action. She cautioned, however, that emerging threats, climate risks, and systemic gaps demand sustained investment in research, innovation, and equitable access to healthcare.
Dr. Braka called for united action to secure a healthier and more resilient future for all Ghanaians, underscoring the importance of science-led strategies in building sustainable health systems.
