Governor Johnson Pandit Asiama of the Bank of Ghana underscored the country’s economic resilience during the Governor’s Roundtable session at the Kwahu Business Forum, assuring the business community of continued stability in the financial markets.
Reflecting on Ghana’s economic performance in 2025, Dr Asiama pointed to strong macroeconomic indicators, including a stable exchange rate. “The Cedi is stable and under control,” he affirmed, adding that central banks operate in a unique space where decisions are shaped by trade-offs. “The work we do is always about trade-offs… trying to strike the right balance,” he explained.
The Governor emphasized the importance of balancing growth and inflation, noting that while 2025 delivered positive results, it came at a significant cost to the central bank. “Last year was good but expensive for the central bank. It took us a lot of money to mop up excess liquidity and bring inflation down to 5.4% by December 2025,” he said. He added that the monetary operations, though costly, were necessary to stabilize the economy.
Looking ahead, Dr Asiama expressed optimism that 2026 would require fewer resources to maintain low inflation. “If you look at where inflation was at the end of December 2024 and where it is now, it wouldn’t involve the same level of resources to keep it low and stable going forward,” he remarked.
He concluded by stressing the importance of collaboration between the central bank and the business community, assuring participants that strengthening financial institutions remains a priority. “When banks are strong, they can give more credit,” he said.
The Governor’s Roundtable marked the closing session of the 2026 Kwahu Business Forum, which began on April 3. The three-day event brought together business leaders, investors, policymakers, and development partners to deliberate on strategies for stimulating business growth. Distinguished attendees included Chief of Staff to the President, Mr Julius Debrah; Eastern Regional Minister, Mrs Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey; Economic Advisor to the President, Mr Seth Terkper; and Legal Counsel to the President, Ms Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew.
