Voting in the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election has officially concluded, with electoral officers now sorting and tallying ballots at polling centers across the constituency.
The polls opened at 7:00 a.m. and closed at 5:00 p.m., wrapping up a full day of voting to select a new representative following the passing of the sitting MP, Naser Toure.
The Electoral Commission is expected to announce the results later today.
Five contenders are in the race for the seat:
- Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed – National Democratic Congress (NDC)
- Baba Ali Yusif – New Patriotic Party (NPP)
- Umar Sanda Mohammed – Independent candidate
- David Kanor – Independent candidate
- Ibrahim Iddrisu – Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG)
The election was peaceful, with no incidents of violence reported, though turnout was said to be relatively low. A heavy police presence was maintained to ensure order, while party supporters closely observed the counting process.
Both the NDC and NPP candidates voiced confidence, with their supporters equally optimistic about securing victory in what has been a keenly followed contest.
