Unpaid Nurses and Midwives Threaten Strike Over Salary Arrears

Members of the Coalition of Unpaid Nurses and Midwives have voiced strong concerns over delays in the payment of their salaries, warning that they may be compelled to withdraw their services if government fails to act swiftly.

The coalition, representing more than 6,000 nurses and midwives nationwide, disclosed that while a few members have received one month’s pay, about 300 have not been paid at all since they began work in December 2024.

Frustrated by the prolonged hardship, the group accused government of failing to honour its assurances. They noted that the Ministry of Health had earlier promised to release a payment plan after settling November salaries, but no such plan has been implemented.

Speaking at a press conference in Ejisu on Monday, December 15, 2025, the coalition urged government to immediately clear all outstanding arrears.

“We have responsibilities like rent, families, and children to cater for. Just this month alone, many of our landlords were after us for rent. I mostly commute from Komfo Anokye Hospital to Santasi, and sometimes I have to continue on foot to get home because I haven’t been paid. This situation has affected us deeply,” said Michael Makafui, one of the affected nurses.

He added, “We just want to get paid. We wouldn’t be here if they had paid us. We are not asking for promises; we just want our arrears settled this month.”

The coalition’s ultimatum raises fears of possible disruption in healthcare delivery across the country if government does not urgently resolve the matter.
