Public Transport Fares in Ghana to Rise by 20% Starting August 8, 2025

Beginning Friday, August 8, 2025, public transportation fares throughout Ghana will see a 20% hike.

This decision stems from a directive issued by the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), in partnership with various transport unions, and aligns with the Administrative Framework governing Public Transport Fares.

A statement jointly signed by Emmanuel Ohene-Yeboah, General Secretary, and Alhaji Tanko, Acting National Chairman of the Council, explained that the fare revision was prompted by three major factors that have significantly increased the financial burden on transport providers.

  • Firstly, operators report that despite a previous 15% fare cut introduced on May 21, 2025, there has been no matching decrease in the cost of spare parts or other essential goods and services.
  • Secondly, the implementation of a new GH¢1.00 per litre fuel surcharge has led to an estimated 8% rise in fuel prices, directly affecting the running costs for drivers and transport firms.
  • Thirdly, the deteriorating condition of roads nationwide has escalated vehicle maintenance expenses, adding to the economic strain faced by operators.

The 20% fare increment will be applicable across all forms of public transport, including shared taxis, intra-city “trotro” minibuses, long-distance intercity coaches, and freight services.

“All commercial transport operators and companies are to comply with the new fares and visibly post them at their loading terminals,” the statement emphasized.

The Council is urging passengers, drivers, and the wider public to support the smooth rollout of the revised fare structure.

The previous fare adjustment took place in May this year, when prices were lowered due to shifts in fuel costs and government measures.

However, the GRTCC notes that current economic challenges and worsening road infrastructure have compelled transport operators to reassess and revise the fare system.
