President Recalls Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria Over Vote-Buying Allegations

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the immediate recall of Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, following allegations of voter inducement during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) primaries in the Ayawaso East Constituency.

Baba Jamal, who contested in the primaries, was among several candidates accused of vote-buying. However, the President emphasized that Baba Jamal was the only serving public officer implicated, making his case particularly sensitive.

In a statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, the Presidency underscored the need to uphold the integrity of public office. “Without prejudice to the ongoing internal party processes, and strictly in view of the standards of conduct expected of public officers, the President considers it necessary to act decisively to preserve the integrity of public office and to avoid any perception of impropriety,” the statement read.

The NDC’s General Secretary has confirmed that the party has commenced investigations into the allegations. Meanwhile, the Minister for Foreign Affairs has been instructed to take immediate administrative and diplomatic steps to implement the recall.

The directive takes effect without delay, signaling the government’s commitment to enforcing its Code of Conduct for Political Appointees and maintaining public trust in the face of electoral controversies.
