The Ashanti Regional Police Command has mounted a manhunt for armed robbers who attacked passengers along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso (KDS) road in the Nyinahini District on Sunday night, April 12, 2026, resulting in the death of Berekum Chelsea footballer Dominic Frimpong.
According to a police statement issued on April 13, the incident occurred at about 10:30 pm when a VIP bus carrying about thirty players and officials of Berekum Chelsea from Samreboi to Berekum came under attack by six armed men, three of whom were wielding pump-action guns. In an attempt to escape, the bus skidded into a bush.
During the assault, Dominic Frimpong sustained gunshot injuries and was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital, where he tragically passed away while receiving treatment. Another victim, George Owusu Afriyie, 52, was robbed of GHS 4,500. Police retrieved two spent cartridges from the scene as exhibits.
The Regional Command has since deployed additional personnel and crime scene experts to the area and assured the public that the perpetrators will be arrested and brought to justice. “The public is urged to remain calm and continue to have confidence in the Police while investigations continue,” the statement signed by DSP Godwin Ahinyio, Head of Public Affairs Unit, emphasized.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the football fraternity, with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) extending condolences to the family of the deceased and pledging to work with authorities to strengthen security arrangements for clubs traveling for domestic competitions.
This tragic event highlights growing concerns about highway robberies and the urgent need for enhanced safety measures for travelers across the country.
