Peace Council Condemns Renewed Violence In Nkwanta

The National Peace Council (NPC) has condemned the renewed violence in Nkwanta in the Oti Region, which has claimed at least five lives, describing the development as both troubling and unexpected.

According to the Council, the escalation comes barely weeks after it facilitated dialogue among key stakeholders in the area, culminating in a 13-point peace agreement aimed at restoring lasting calm.

Speaking to Citi News, the Public Relations Officer of the Council, Kwesi Yirenkyi, expressed disappointment over the resurgence of tensions despite commitments made during the engagement

“We were in Nkwanta from the 1st to the 3rd of March to conduct a dialogue. As a council we are really surprised this has happened. At the end of the dialogue they all agreed to commit to a 13-point declaration after the dialogue.

“We condemn the killings and we urge the security to continue with the investigations into all the killings. We are urging the parties to to exercise restraint,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has deployed additional security personnel to the Nkwanta South Municipality following the latest attacks, as efforts continue to restore calm and prevent further violence.
