Parliament Reaffirms Commitment to Women’s Leadership on International Women’s Day

The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Bernard Ahiafor, has delivered a statement on behalf of the Rt. Hon. Speaker, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, to mark International Women’s Day, underscoring the critical role of women in legislative leadership and governance.

In his address, Hon. Ahiafor emphasized that women’s participation in parliamentary leadership is essential to building institutions that are responsive to the needs of citizens. He noted that Parliament has partnered with ElectHER, a Pan-African gender-focused organization, to advance women’s representation across the continent. The collaboration, he explained, is designed to promote data-driven engagement and peer learning, thereby expanding women’s presence and influence within legislatures.

“On this International Women’s Day, we reaffirm our collective commitment as African Parliamentary leaders towards building representative, credible, and responsive institutions that recognise and support women’s leadership,” Hon. Ahiafor stated.

The Deputy Speaker’s remarks highlight Parliament’s ongoing efforts to strengthen inclusivity and ensure that women’s voices are not only heard but also shape decision-making processes at the highest levels of governance.
