The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has received warm congratulations from Members of Parliament following his election as Chairperson of the Africa Geopolitical Group of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
The Majority Leader, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, led the House in extending its commendations to the Speaker. He noted that at the 151st IPU Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, Rt. Hon. Bagbin was unanimously elected to the position after the two other contestants withdrew from the race.
Hon. Ayariga emphasized that the Speaker’s election was a testament to his distinguished political career and leadership qualities, which continue to earn him recognition on the international stage.
The First Deputy Minority Whip, Hon. Habib Iddrisu, who was part of Ghana’s delegation to the Assembly, also praised the Speaker’s long-standing contributions to parliamentary democracy. He highlighted that Bagbin’s decades of service and experience made his unanimous election unsurprising and well-deserved.
In addition to his new role at the IPU, Rt. Hon. Bagbin currently serves as:
- President of the Conference of Speakers and Presidents of African Legislatures (CoSPAL)
- Immediate past Chairman of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) International
These positions, MPs noted, underscore his influence and stature within both African and global parliamentary circles. It was also revealed during the session that the Member of Parliament for Sekyere Afram Plains, Hon. Gyekye Afrah Nasira, is a member of the Young Parliamentarian Forum of the IPU, further strengthening Ghana’s representation within the international body.
The IPU’s Africa Geopolitical Group, comprising 52 member states, plays a critical role in shaping the continent’s collective voice within the global parliamentary community. With Speaker Bagbin at the helm, Ghana’s Parliament is expected to play a more prominent role in advancing Africa’s priorities on issues of governance, democracy, and development.
This recognition marks another milestone in the Speaker’s career and reflects Ghana’s growing diplomatic and parliamentary influence on the international stage.
