In Africa, vulnerability and poverty are on the rise. This development has been a headache for all heads of state in the continent. Many foundations have done their best to address it. But it seems the problem keeps increasing while the population grows. Early this year, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), known as Road 2 Jannah (R2J) foundation, under the leadership of its Founder and Executive Director, Mr Kamaru Abdulai, was set up to help reach out to the poor and needy in the acquisition of skills programmes to eradicate poverty in the communities. Road 2 Jannah (R2J) foundation’s core values...

Ukraine: First Lady Olena Zelenska condemns Russian ‘mass murder’
Ukraine’s First Lady Olena Zelenska has issued an impassioned statement on the Russian invasion, condemning the “mass murder” of the country’s civilians. She focused on child casualties, mentioning the names of three children who had died in the bombardments. She said Ukraine wanted peace but would defend its borders and its identity. The whereabouts of Mrs Zelenska, 44, are unknown, and her husband President Volodymyr Zelensky says his family is a target for Russian forces. In an open letter published on the Ukrainian president’s website late on Tuesday in English, International Women’s Day, Mrs Zelenska said she had received numerous requests...
Zimbabwe clinics struggle for nurses after exodus to the UK
Health clinics in Zimbabwe are facing a crisis as increasing numbers of nurses leave the country in search of better prospects, as Shingai Nyoka writes. The young woman in a dark green gown was in the throes of labour, her face twisted in pain. Still for one minute and then groaning and writhing this way and that in the next. I stood at the half-open door peering in, I had permission to be there for a story but felt more like a voyeur, an intruder in a deeply personal moment. Two weeks earlier, the acting chief nursing officer for the...
Deputy Speaker to vote while presiding over parliament as speaker
The Supreme Court of Ghana has ruled that the deputy speaker is allowed to vote even when he is chairing as Speaker in parliament. The decision taken on Wednesday, 9 March 2022 means that if an issue requiring voting is submitted to Parliament, the deputy speaker of Parliament, who chairs in the absence of the actual Speaker of Parliament, can also vote on the issue. This ruling is to say, first deputy speaker Joseph Osei Owusu, did not fault in voting for the approval of the 2022 budget. On November 30, last year, Joseph Osei Owusu, a member-elect of Bekwai...
Ukraine: Angry Zelensky vows to punish Russian atrocities
President Volodymyr Zelensky has said everyone who commits atrocities against Ukraine’s civilians will be punished. He said Ukrainians would not forgive or forget, and accused invading Russian troops of deliberate murder. “There will be no quiet place on Earth for you. Except for the grave,” the president said. Ukrainian officials say Russia is striking civilian targets around the country, including hospitals, nurseries, and schools. But Russia denies targeting civilians, saying it is carrying out a “special military operation” against Ukrainian “nationalists” and “neo-Nazis”. Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Olha Stefanishyna told the BBC that, after “strong resistance” from the Ukrainian army,...
Ukraine war: PM to hold talks with world leaders on further sanctions
Boris Johnson is to hold talks with the Canadian and Dutch prime ministers in London, as Western powers prepare to agree further sanctions on Russia. But the government’s refugee policy is coming under scrutiny after it was confirmed over the weekend that about 50 Ukrainians had been granted visas. Meanwhile, Parliament is to pass legislation targeting money laundering by oligarchs close to Vladimir Putin. It comes amid calls to do more as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continues. Ukrainian cities have continued to suffer intense shelling, with officials saying Russian forces are targeting hospitals, nurseries and schools, and residents have been caught...
One dead after Scottish trawler capsizes off Norway
A man has died and seven crew members have been rescued after a Scottish fishing trawler capsized off Norway. The Njord, which left Peterhead on Saturday afternoon, got into difficulty in the North Sea, about 100 nautical miles west of Stavanger. Rescuers found the crew on the keel of the capsized boat on Sunday afternoon. The Norwegian Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre (JRCC) said three who had inhaled diesel were airlifted to hospital in Bergen and one later died. Five others were picked up by an offshore vessel, the Olympic Challenger. The JRCC told BBC Scotland there was no radio contact...
The Law Society of Ghana breaks Ghana Bar Association’s monopoly
A group of lawyers have formed a new organisation to compete with the Ghana Bar Association (GBA). Lawyers who graduate from the Ghana School of Law will have the Law Society of Ghana, limited by guarantee, as an alternative professional organisation. This would end the GBA’s monopoly as the country’s only professional association of lawyers, which has been in operation since 1877. The Law Society of Ghana has CG012690222 registration number and the C0061614130 tax identification number. “I hereby certify that Law Society of Ghana – LBG is this day incorporated under the Companies Act, 2019 (Act 992) and that...
“Let us guard the peace and stability we are enjoying jealously”- Nana Addo
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has warned that anyone attempting to overthrow the government and undermine the country’s democratic successes will be dealt with harshly. The President informed the 65th Independence Day parade in Cape Coast that his administration is devoted to enhancing peace and stability in order to achieve the goals for which the country transitioned to constitutional governance. Some observers have warned that the country’s deteriorating economic state could make it vulnerable to a military takeover. Prof. Raymond Atuguba, the Dean of the University of Ghana School of Law, recently expressed his concern that Ghana could face a...
