The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has affirmed that the Opposition New Patriotic Party is fully prepared to collaborate with the government in addressing the persistent conflict in Bawku.
During a press briefing held on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, in Accra, Mr. Kodua who previously served as Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency under the NPP government expressed the party’s deep concern over the ongoing loss of lives in Bawku, particularly among innocent students and civilians caught in the crossfire due to their geographical location or ethnic identity.
“The Bawku crisis is worrying. People are losing their lives every day not because of their actions, but simply because of where they live or which tribe they belong to,” he said.
He warned the incumbent National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration against employing propaganda and ethnic rhetoric when handling such delicate matters. “Politics must not take precedence over issues of chieftaincy, ethnicity, or faith. These are domains where caution is essential,” he emphasized.
Mr. Kodua further accused the NDC of leveraging the Bawku unrest for electoral advantage during the 2024 polls, alleging that the party made divisive tribal remarks and pledges aimed at securing votes.
Nonetheless, he reiterated the NPP’s dedication to fostering peace. “In the interest of our democracy and the lives at stake, we are always willing to assist the government in finding a durable resolution to the Bawku conflict,” he affirmed.
He called on the government to approach the issue as a national concern and to engage all political stakeholders, particularly the NPP, in dialogue. “Whenever the NDC government extends an invitation, the NPP stands ready to participate and contribute.”
Mr. Kodua also commended the efforts of the Asantehene and other traditional authorities striving to restore peace in Bawku, but stressed that their initiatives will only bear fruit if political parties come together in support.
