The Northern Regional Executive Committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has declared its opposition to the High Court’s decision annulling the Kpandai parliamentary election, with the party’s Communications Director, Mr. Danjuma, describing the judgment as a “grave miscarriage of electoral justice” and an “affront to democracy.”
Mr. Danjuma insisted that Honourable Matthew Nyindam remains the legitimately elected Member of Parliament, a position he said has been affirmed by the party leadership, the Minority Caucus, and the Speaker of Parliament.
He stressed that the NPP will pursue every available legal avenue to defend the seat, urging supporters to respond with “law, truth, and democratic vigilance.”
The Communications Director alleged that the ruling was influenced by senior figures within the opposition NDC, citing premature celebrations by NDC supporters in Kpandai and Tamale even before the official announcement.
He cautioned that the precedent set by the judgment could undermine future elections in Ghana, arguing that it appears to reward violence and electoral malpractice.
Presenting the party’s account of the December 7, 2024, polls, Mr. Danjuma said voting was peaceful but claimed NDC operatives disrupted the collation process, destroying electoral materials. The Returning Officer subsequently moved the collation to Tamale, where Nyindam was declared winner with 27,647 votes (53.31%) against Daniel Nsala Wakpal’s 24,213 votes (46.69%).
Mr. Danjuma questioned why the court ordered a rerun across all 152 polling stations when the NDC’s petition challenged only 41. He argued that the ruling disregards electoral jurisprudence and nullifies thousands of valid votes without justification, describing it as “judicial overreach of the most dangerous kind.”
