The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has confirmed that it will hold its National Delegates Conference as planned on Saturday, July 19, 2025.
This decision was made even though some party members asked for the event to be delayed so they could deal with important issues within the party.
After looking closely at the request, the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Council decided on Monday, July 14, not to change the date. They said they had already made many plans and promises for the event.
Joseph Osei-Owusu, who leads the team organizing the conference, shared the decision during a press meeting after the Council’s gathering.
“There was a petition that the date for the conference should be changed. Our NEC, after considering it, decided that we should continue. Given the preparation and commitments that we have made, the conference will proceed as announced,” Mr. Osei-Owusu stated.
This conference is expected to be a very important moment for the NPP, with big changes to the party’s rules being the main topic.
Delegates will talk about suggested changes based on a report from the Prof. Mike Oquaye Committee.
Also, a proposal from the party’s 2019 conference in Kumasi—which was agreed to in theory but never officially accepted—will be looked at again and is expected to be finally approved this time. Party leaders see this as a key chance to finish that process.
Richard Ahiagbah, the NPP’s Communications Director, spoke about how important these rule changes are during a press briefing before the event. He said the changes are meant to make the party stronger and better prepared to win future elections, especially the one in 2028.
“That report, which has a package of amendments and proposals resulting from the Mike Oquaye Committee and other submissions by party members is part of the bundle that this conference will consider,” Mr. Ahiagbah explained, underscoring the comprehensive nature of the reforms.
