The National Identification Authority (NIA), in partnership with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), has resumed Ghana Card registration for children aged 6 to 14 years in the Volta and Oti Regions.
The exercise, which begins Tuesday, May 5, forms part of a nationwide programme to register approximately 3.1 million children. It is aimed at strengthening Ghana’s national identity system by ensuring inclusion from an early age. Each phase of the rollout is expected to last at least 21 days to guarantee comprehensive coverage.
Registration teams will visit both public and private schools daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Children outside the school system may register at designated schools or centres in their communities.
To complete registration, parents or guardians must present the child’s original Birth Certificate, valid Ghanaian passport, or Certificate of Acquired Citizenship. Where these are unavailable, an Oath of Identity form may be completed by a parent, relative, or legal guardian. For children without known relatives, two Social Welfare Officers may vouch under oath.
Parents are encouraged to provide their child’s National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) card or number during registration. All persons presenting children must be Ghanaian, at least 18 years old, of sound mind, and in possession of a valid Ghana Card.
Children registered during the 2024 pilot phase but yet to receive their cards are advised to visit the NIA District Office where they registered for issuance.
The NIA has cautioned against providing false information or attempting to register non-Ghanaians, stressing that such acts are punishable by law. The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to building a secure, inclusive, and reliable national identity system for all citizens.
