Nduom calls for a ban on foreign foods at state functions

The bankroller of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Dr Paa Kwesi Nduom has called for the protection of locally manufactured food items in the country.

According to the failed presidential aspirant, there is a need for the government to take a look at placing a ban on many of the imported food items that have flooded Ghanaian markets.

The PPP’s presidential candidate made this suggestion in a letter addressed to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
He mentioned food items such as sugar, chocolate, and fruit juice among other items that need to be banned to protect local producers.

He said the ban on the importation of these food items will help save the Cedi from nose-diving in the wake of the economic challenges.

He added that the government should further consider curtailing the serving of such food items at all state functions.

“Enough of the consumption of these imported food items in the country,” the statement said.

He suggested that local food items should be procured for the National Feeding Programme and feeding of students as part of the government’s flagship program, Free Senior High Secondary School (Free SHS).

He was of the view that the consumption of these food items has a telling effect on the health needs of the people of Ghana.

He further called for a policy on the consumption of indigenous food items.
