NCA orders closure of 62 radio stations over regulatory breaches

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has directed the immediate shutdown of 62 radio stations across Ghana due to regulatory violations. The affected stations include Happy FM, Asaase Radio, and several others.

The closures stem from multiple regulatory breaches, including failure to renew licenses, non-compliance with broadcasting regulations, and security concerns. The enforcement action follows a directive from the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, who instructed the NCA to apply sanctions against stations found to be operating illegally based on a recent audit.

The 62 stations fall into four main categories. Some continued broadcasting despite their licenses expiring in 2024, violating Section 2 (4) of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775). Others failed to begin operations within two years of receiving their licenses, violating Regulation 54 of the Electronic Communications Regulations, 2011 (L.I. 1991). Some received provisional licenses but failed to pay the full authorization fees, violating Section 2 (4) of Act 775, while others paid for provisional licenses but did not meet the necessary requirements for final approval.

The NCA emphasized that while radio stations play a vital role in national development, they must operate within the bounds of the law. The Authority warned that continued non-compliance will attract severe consequences.

The shutdown order means that these stations must cease broadcasting immediately until they rectify their violations and obtain full authorization. The NCA has urged all operators to meet legal requirements to ensure order and sustainability within the broadcasting industry.

This development marks one of the largest regulatory enforcement actions in Ghana’s media landscape, signaling the government’s commitment to upholding broadcasting standards.
