MoH Assures Public Amid KATH Strike

The Ministry of Health has described as unfortunate the strike action by doctors and nurses at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) following the suspension of the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo.

In a press statement, the Ministry explained that the suspension was an administrative measure taken to ensure accountability and adherence to directives from the President regarding access to emergency healthcare services. It noted that the CEO had announced the closure of the Accident and Emergency Centre without authorization, contrary to national policy.

The Ministry emphasised that the action was not punitive but intended to safeguard patient safety and uphold discipline within the health sector. It further assured that dialogue and established dispute resolution channels remain the best path to addressing grievances.

Highlighting ongoing interventions, the Ministry cited the retooling of major hospitals, introduction of a National Bed Management System, operationalisation of selected Agenda 111 facilities, and plans to establish a National Accident and Emergency Centre in Accra.

The statement also addressed concerns raised by staff, assuring that the Minister for Health is engaging doctors and nurses at KATH to rescind their decision and resume work. Meanwhile, the Ghana Health Service has been directed to implement immediate mitigating measures to ensure emergency healthcare services remain accessible to the public.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to protecting patients’ interests while ensuring a safe and conducive working environment for health professionals. It urged affected staff to reconsider their decision in the interest of patients and the general population.
