Minority Leader Credits Bawumia for Gold-for-Reserve Policy

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has maintained that former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia should be recognized as the originator of the Gold-for-Reserve initiative, now being rolled out under the Mahama administration.

Responding to President Mahama’s State of the Nation Address on Friday, Afenyo-Markin acknowledged that the policy has yielded some economic benefits.

“The president is telling us today that some gains have been made… through this Gold-For-Reserve policy,” he remarked.

But he quickly shifted focus to what he described as a missing piece in the narrative of the policy’s beginnings. “Mr. Speaker, the Gold-For-Reserve policy what they have failed to tell Ghanaians is that the Bawumia that they attacked is the brainchild of this policy,” he asserted.

To underscore his point, the Minority Leader invoked a local proverb, urging the government to give due recognition even to political rivals when their contributions are valid.“Mr. Speaker, I would want to urge the government give to Bawumia what belongs to Bawumia,” he said.

Afenyo-Markin’s comments highlight the ongoing debate over the intellectual ownership of the Gold-for-Reserve program, which seeks to strengthen Ghana’s reserves through gold-backed measures while stabilizing the economy.
