The Minority in Parliament has called for the dismissal of the Director General and Board Chairman of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), accusing them of failing in their oversight duties regarding the inclusion of Gender Identity material in a Senior High School teacher manual.
Addressing the press on Thursday, January 15, the Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, argued that NaCCA’s leadership had betrayed public trust by permitting the content.
“We call for the immediate dismissal of the Director General and the Board Chairperson of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment for their failure in oversight and breach of public trust,” he said.
The Minority’s demand comes in the wake of allegations by the MP for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, who claimed that government was advancing an LGBTQ agenda through teacher guides and other instructional materials used in schools.
Following the uproar, NaCCA withdrew printed copies of the Year Two Physical Education and Health (Elective) Teacher Manual, acknowledging that portions on “Gender Identity” were inconsistent with Ghanaian cultural values and norms.
The Council has since issued a revised version of the manual, which it maintains now reflects national values and a biological perspective on the subject.
The controversy has ignited a wider discussion on curriculum oversight and NaCCA’s responsibility to ensure that educational content aligns with societal expectations while also meeting international academic standards.
