President John Dramani Mahama has pledged a GH₵20 million government investment in Ghana’s film sector, aimed at strengthening local hubs such as Kumawood and Gallywood and driving growth in the creative economy.
The announcement was made during his 2026 State of the Nation Address to Parliament on February 27. Mahama emphasized that the creative arts, particularly those harnessing new media, are increasingly positioning Ghana on the global stage.
“More than any first-class traditional media outlet, our creatives leveraging new media are projecting Ghana,” he said.
Highlighting the role of innovation in economic transformation, the President stressed that the nation’s future prosperity will not rely solely on traditional industries. “Our economy will not be built only by traditional sectors but also by human creativity, human creativity sectors that will absorb those people who will be displaced from the shop floor by the new AI technologies that are being rolled out,” he stated.
Mahama also pointed to Ghana’s growing reputation as a tourist destination, attributing its appeal to “our history, culture, our arts, our music, our fashion, and our food.”
The allocation underscores the administration’s commitment to harnessing the creative arts as a driver of economic opportunity, while reinforcing Ghana’s cultural identity on the international stage.
