Parts of the Madina Market in Accra caught fire in the early morning of Friday, September 19, 2025, destroying numerous shops and wooden stalls. Swift intervention by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in the early hours of Friday averted what could have been a devastating inferno at the Madina Market.

According to GNFS, a distress call was received at exactly 1:36 a.m. reporting a fire outbreak in a section of the busy market. Within two minutes, the first crew from the Madina Fire Station was on the scene.
Due to the rapid spread of the flames and the absence of nearby hydrants, four additional fire engines from Legon, Headquarters, Jubilee House, and Industrial Area Fire Stations were quickly dispatched to reinforce the operation.
The blaze, which gutted several wooden sheds and stalls, two corn milling shops, and nine containers, was confined at 3:07 a.m., brought under control at 3:19 a.m., and completely extinguished by 4:40 a.m.

Firefighters managed to salvage a one-storey warehouse and adjoining structures, preventing the flames from spreading further into the market. No casualties were recorded.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, but investigations are underway.
In a statement, GNFS reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property through timely and professional emergency response, urging the public to observe fire safety measures, especially in high-risk commercial areas.
