The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has pledged maximum security during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primary scheduled for January 31, 2026.
Speaking at the signing of a Peace Pact by the five flagbearer aspirants, the IGP disclosed that at least 70 police personnel will be deployed to each polling centre nationwide to guarantee a peaceful and credible process.
He explained that the Ghana Police Service has formally written to the Minister for the Interior to notify the Minister of Defence for military support in Bawku, a security flashpoint. “Bawku is the area where we may need the support of the military. All other areas countrywide, the military will be on standby while the police take the lead,” Mr. Yohuno stated.
The IGP emphasized that the deployment strategy will involve inner, middle, and outer layers of security, with senior officers stationed across the country to oversee operations.
His assurance comes as the NPP prepares for a crucial primary, with five aspirants vying for the party’s flagbearership. The police say they are committed to ensuring that the exercise is conducted in an atmosphere of peace, transparency, and safety.
