Government is set to soon announce a vendor country to develop Ghana’s first nuclear power project to provide an affordable and reliable baseload source as Ghana transitions to clean energy.

Nuclear vendor countries are those who have the expertise in producing nuclear reactors, and are also capable of helping other countries to build their nuclear energy capacity.According to the Deputy Minister of Energy, in charge of power, William Owuraku Aidoo, the government is currently evaluating submissions from vendor countries to select a suitable vendor and nuclear technology to partner with Ghana in the development of a Nuclear Power Plant.

Mr Aidoo noted that government is committed to support the nuclear power project aimed at ensuring the achievement of net zero carbon emission in Ghana by 2070.
Speaking at a media workshop organised by Nuclear Power Ghana on the theme: “Nuclear Safety, A Public Fear and Concern,” the Deputy Minister assured that government is going to ensure due diligence in the selection of the appropriate technology in the adoption of Ghana’s first nuclear power plant.

The proposed power project is at its second Phase. This consists of selection of a preferred site, selection of vendor and strategic partner, community engagements and stakeholder management, and planning and development of related nuclear project infrastructure.
