Government to Introduce Performance Benchmarks for Ambassadors and Diplomats

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has disclosed that Ghanaian ambassadors and diplomatic representatives will soon operate under specific performance benchmarks.

This groundbreaking initiative, designed to enhance economic diplomacy, represents a significant milestone in the nation’s foreign affairs strategy.

Speaking at the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD-9), Minister Ablakwa announced that the framework will be formally unveiled on September 1 by President John Dramani Mahama. He described the move as a first in Ghana’s diplomatic history.

“On the first of September, the President will be launching, for the first time ever, key performance indicators (KPIs) for all ambassadors and diplomats from the Republic of Ghana,” Ablakwa said. “This has never happened in our history.”

The Minister emphasized that the KPIs will place economic diplomacy at the heart of Ghana’s international relations approach.

Under the new system, diplomats will be expected to attract investment, build stronger trade alliances, and ensure their efforts contribute meaningfully to the well-being of Ghanaian citizens.

“The President wants our diplomacy to make an impact. Our diplomacy must lead to improvements in the lives of people,” he stressed.

This shift in policy also reflects Ghana’s intention to become a more appealing hub for global investors. Ablakwa added that the Foreign Affairs Ministry has been tasked with ensuring that embassies and missions abroad actively promote Ghana’s interests while fostering a secure and investor-friendly atmosphere.

“Diplomacy must promote investment, and diplomacy must create a safe haven for all of those who invest in our country,” he affirmed.
