Government to Build 10,000-Bed Hostel at University of Ghana

The government has announced plans to put up a 10,000-bed hostel at the University of Ghana to help address the long-standing accommodation difficulties faced by students on campus.

President John Dramani Mahama revealed the initiative during the opening of the University of Ghana’s 77th Annual New Year School and Conference on Tuesday, January 6. He reiterated government’s resolve to expand infrastructure across the country’s tertiary institutions.

According to the President, the project stems from an agreement reached during his official trip to Singapore. He explained that the hostel will be constructed using prefabricated technology, a method designed to speed up completion and enhance efficiency.

He further noted that groundwork for the project has already begun. The machinery and factory equipment required to produce the hostel’s components have been shipped from Singapore and are currently on their way to Accra.

“When I went to Singapore, we signed an agreement for a 10,000-student hostel at the University of Ghana, and this is going to be a prefabricated building, meaning the structure will be manufactured elsewhere and then assembled on campus. The machinery and factory equipment that will manufacture the building components have been shipped from Singapore and are currently on their way to Accra,” he said.
