Twenty-nine Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) across the Greater Accra Region have received a significant consignment of sanitation equipment to strengthen their capacity in maintaining public health and environmental cleanliness.

The distribution includes 1,600 pairs of gloves, 1,000 long brooms, 550 waste bins, 1,000 shovels, hundreds of wheelbarrows, and other essential tools. These items are expected to enhance the effectiveness of the monthly National Sanitation Day exercises and empower Environmental Health Officers to enforce cleanliness standards across communities.
Speaking at the handover ceremony on behalf of the Sector Minister, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, the Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Hon. Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, emphasized that the initiative forms part of government’s broader strategy to strengthen local governance.
“Providing these resources is not just about logistics; it is about ensuring that sanitation policies are backed by the practical means to keep our streets clean and our communities healthy,” she stated.
Hon. Sowah reminded MMDCEs and Coordinating Directors that the true impact of the tools depends on responsible management. She urged local leaders to ensure that every item is used effectively and for its intended purpose.
Beyond government’s investment, she called for a shared sense of duty among traditional leaders and the general public, stressing that a cleaner Ghana can only be achieved when every citizen takes responsibility for their surroundings.
With the right equipment now in place, attention turns to consistent field action, desilting, flood prevention, and the maintenance of a healthier environment for all residents of the capital.
