Swift intervention by personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) averted a major disaster at the Kwapong Nursing and Midwifery Training College in the Ahafo Region, after a fire broke out in one of the dormitory blocks early Friday morning.
According to the Public Relations Officer for the Ahafo Region, the distress call was received at exactly 7:12 a.m. The Kukuom Fire Station crew arrived on the scene at 7:30 a.m., with reinforcement from the Goaso Municipal Fire Station joining shortly after. The combined efforts of both teams successfully brought the blaze under control by 8:45 a.m. and fully extinguished it by 10:26 a.m.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the fire originated from a room on the first floor of a one-storey dormitory block. It quickly spread to six other rooms, consuming roofing sheets, ceiling panels, students’ personal belongings, books, beds, and bedding. Two fire extinguishers located on the affected floor also exploded during the incident, intensifying the blaze.
Despite the extent of damage on the upper floor, firefighters managed to salvage the ground floor of the building, preventing further loss. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were recorded.
The GNFS has launched a full-scale investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire. Meanwhile, authorities have commended the prompt response and professionalism of the fire crews involved.
The incident has raised concerns about fire safety preparedness in educational institutions across the region, with calls for regular fire drills and inspections to prevent future occurrences.
